Arches are an architectural advancement that has allowed for many of the worlds great monuments to be built: The Gateway Arch (see left), Arc de Triumph, and Rua Augusta Arch to name only a few. But why are arches so significant? How have they evolved with humanity? These are only a few questions we are looking to answer here.
To define what an arch is in architecture, first let us turn to Encyclopedia Britannica. The entry for arches states that an arch is, "a curved member that is used to span an opening and to support a load from above." The reason this is so important is that an arch can span a larger area and support more weight than simple horizontal beams. Additionally, advances in arches allowed for more ornate and elaborate monuments. Through history we see the development of arches from simple structure to cosmetic focal point. Arch. (2016).
